DiSC is a tool, a method to measure an individual’s behavior under specific circumstance or situation. Based on the work of Dr. William Moulton Marston, this quadrant model, where four typical “Personality Attributes” or styles of individuals are observed to gauge various personality traits. All the four quadrants together form one complete observational behavior system.
Every person possesses four typical characteristics, but in varying degrees which forms the core reference of an individual’s behavior. They are Dominance, Influence, Steadiness and Conscientiousness. A high dominance or D score represents individuals who are great problem solvers and assertive by nature. Individuals with high I scores tend to be efficient communicators and active orators. Patience is the hall mark of people with high S scores. They are the individuals who are persistent, coherent, ordered and do not rush at their objectives. Finally, a high conscientious or “C” style reflects a personality who adheres to rules, regulations and structure.
Today, DiSC is recognized universally and practiced by number of entities such as Human Resource companies, large organizations, consultants and sports bodies.
There are several online personality tests available. These are basically personality enduring patterns of behavior, thought and emotion of individuals. There is no single school of thought as far as personality test is concerned. Personality tests are generally based on the several dynamic traits such as id, ego, and super-ego. The tests attempt to analyze personality in terms of a discrete number of key traits by statistical method and trait analysis. Raymond Cattell one of the leading authors on this subject proposed a theory of 16 personality factors/traits.
Based on Marston’s Model, DiSC profile offers a self-construed account of habits and behavioral inclinations of individuals. It helps individuals understand their own behavioral dispositions, allowing them to introspect their shortcomings, their strong points and that of their contemporaries. This is turn helps them develop strategies to meet their objectives.
Other advantages include better communication, greater teamwork spirit, and reduced conflict, to create a better working ambience. It provides a great avenue where employees can understand and develop inter-personal skills and also share their concerns. A hall mark of Disc profile is that it is unsympathetic and impartial but at the same time non-threatening in nature.
It highlights an individual’s basic motivators and his personal goals. It describes an individual’s behavioral tendencies at work, which includes their reactions towards certain situations, people and objectives.
DiSC profile with its unique approach has helped over 50 million people worldwide and still going strong as it evolves into an unbeatable tool in contemporary business times.
